Measurement Snapshot
There is no single value that establishes normality for every person or method. Record the setup and compare measurements in clinical context.
Wrist extension ROM affects weight-bearing through the hand, grip mechanics, and hand-therapy progress. Interpret with the opposite wrist and functional demands.
Standardized Setup
- Patient Position
- Support the forearm on a table in pronation with the hand free past the edge so the wrist can extend without contact.
- Stabilization
- Stabilize the distal forearm so the reading reflects wrist extension rather than forearm lift or elbow movement.
- Landmarks
- Use the lateral wrist near the triquetrum as the axis, the lateral forearm as the stationary reference, and the fifth metacarpal as the moving reference.
Step-by-Step Measurement
- Calibrate the neutral wrist start with the hand in line with the forearm.
- Extend the wrist through the available range with the fingers relaxed.
- Stop at the true end range without lifting the forearm.
- Record the value with active or passive status.
Common Measurement Errors
- Making a fist, which limits extension through finger flexor tension.
- Lifting the forearm to create the appearance of more extension.
- Allowing radial or ulnar deviation during the movement.
Custom Cobb Angle Pro Workflow
The app does not provide a named protocol for this movement. Use Custom as the body part, choose the movement, and apply your own clinical measurement method.
- In Range of Motion, choose Custom as the body part, then Extension as the movement. The app does not provide a named Wrist Extension protocol.
- Choose Photo, Camera, or Phone Sensor and use your own measurement setup. Custom measurements have generic in-app guidance rather than a reviewed movement-specific protocol.
- Record Wrist Extension, side, position, and method in the case label or notes so the saved Custom measurement can be interpreted later.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should wrist extension measurements be interpreted?
Record the measured value with the side, patient position, method, and active or passive status. Compare repeat measurements made the same way and interpret them with the full clinical context; one value alone cannot establish normality or a diagnosis.
Why does making a fist reduce wrist extension?
Flexing the fingers tightens the finger flexors, which cross the wrist and limit extension. Keep the fingers relaxed for a valid measurement.
Why is wrist extension important for weight-bearing?
Tasks such as pushing up from a chair or a plank load the wrist in extension, so a limited range affects the ability to bear weight through the hand.
