There is no single value that establishes normality for every person or method. Record the setup and compare measurements in clinical context.

Elbow flexion ROM is tracked after fracture, dislocation, and stiffness-focused rehabilitation. Small losses matter because the functional arc for daily tasks is narrow.

Standardized Setup

Patient Position
Seat or stand the patient with the arm at the side, the shoulder neutral, and the forearm supinated before flexion begins.
Stabilization
Stabilize the humerus so the shoulder does not flex or abduct to help the elbow reach end range.
Landmarks
Use the lateral epicondyle as the axis, the lateral humerus toward the acromion as the stationary reference, and the lateral forearm toward the radial styloid as the moving reference.

Step-by-Step Measurement

  1. Calibrate the extended elbow start with the forearm supinated.
  2. Flex the elbow through the available sagittal range.
  3. Stop when soft-tissue approximation or the true end range is reached.
  4. Record the value with active or passive status.

Common Measurement Errors

  • Allowing shoulder flexion to help the forearm approach the arm.
  • Changing forearm rotation partway through the test.
  • Mounting the device off the forearm midline.

Custom Cobb Angle Pro Workflow

The app does not provide a named protocol for this movement. Use Custom as the body part, choose the movement, and apply your own clinical measurement method.

  1. In Range of Motion, choose Custom as the body part, then Flexion as the movement. The app does not provide a named Elbow Flexion protocol.
  2. Choose Photo, Camera, or Phone Sensor and use your own measurement setup. Custom measurements have generic in-app guidance rather than a reviewed movement-specific protocol.
  3. Record Elbow Flexion, side, position, and method in the case label or notes so the saved Custom measurement can be interpreted later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should elbow flexion measurements be interpreted?

Record the measured value with the side, patient position, method, and active or passive status. Compare repeat measurements made the same way and interpret them with the full clinical context; one value alone cannot establish normality or a diagnosis.

Why do small elbow flexion losses matter?

Because the functional arc for eating, grooming, and phone use is narrow, even modest losses of elbow flexion can noticeably affect daily activities.

How do you stop the shoulder from assisting elbow flexion?

Stabilize the humerus and keep the shoulder neutral so shoulder flexion or abduction does not artificially help the forearm reach the arm.
